Saint James’ Way

Casa de Panque is only 5km (3 miles) away from Saint James’ Way. Historian Joel Cleto defines Barcelos as the “Living museum of the Portuguese Saint James’ Way”. The references to the Saint James’ Way in Barcelos are hundreds of years old, from the time Portuguese Queen Saint Elizabeth stayed at Barcelos as a pilgrim in 1325, to the most famous legend of Barcelos, the Legend of the Rooster, which talks about a pilgrim that was aided by a miracle from Saint James. Throughout time, Barcelos became an important axis for pilgrims passing through the Saint James’ Way, reinforced by the building of the medieval bridge in the 14th century that truly set Barcelos as a privileged waypoint for Saint James’ pilgrims. One can say the history of Barcelos and of the Saint James’ Way walk together and, today, Barcelos is the epicentre of the Portuguese Saint James’ Way, which can be seen in the city and surrounding region through its monuments, traditions, and handicraft.
